O'Grady lived in Wheaton, Illinois, and graduated from the North High School of Wheaton in 1981. She is the child of Jan O'Grady (a financial planner) as well as Jim O'Grady. The family was raised by her parents in Wheaton (Illinois) where she completed her studies in 1981 at North High School of Wheaton. In commercials, she appeared prior to moving from Wheaton, Illinois, to Los Angeles. Her career O'Grady began her career as models for Montgomery Ward, and well having a number of commercials. She starred in the 1988 romantic comedic film called She's Having a Baby. She then played a recurring part in the ABC comedy China Beach with Dana Delany. O'Grady was the tall-haired team secretary for ABC's NYPD Blue between 1993 through in 1996. Each year, she was awarded Emmy Award nods for Outstanding actor in the Drama Series.
