O'Neil entered the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005 when the singer was still in high school. She advanced to the top 100 round due to the fact that judges were awed by her vocal performance. O'Neil's performance was highly praised by the judges. But, O'Neil suffered a significant drop during the Top 10 and Top 9 final weeks when she got votes for bottom 3, and bottom 2. The judges were shocked by this and proclaimed to the public the fact that Melissa was the best contestant. O'Neil's performances were such awe-inspiring that she was never in the bottom three once in the future. Judge Werner was confident, following another two incredible performances, that O'Neil was going to be the winner from this year's Canadian Idol competition, as being the first female and the youngest contestant in history, following the September 7, 2005 finals. O'Neil was immediately congratulated by Canadian PM Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
